GitLab cannot access Gitolite (better docs/error messages)

Created by: glebm

The above is a frequent problem: https://github.com/gitlabhq/gitlabhq/issues/474 https://github.com/gitlabhq/gitlabhq/issues/315 https://github.com/gitlabhq/gitlabhq/issues/386 ..etc, you get the point

I've been trying to figure out what's wrong with my simple setup (1 gitolite user runs everything) for a day now -- very frustrated and lost.

As a linux user, I don't consider a complete reinstall a solution. (recommended in many threads), but I might just end up having to do that :(

It would be nice to have more detailed error messages, and some kind of diagnostics guide for this.
