Starting Gitlab results in unknown MySQL Error

Trying to start Gitlab, after upgrading from 8.3 to 8.4 results in an unknown error by MySQL.
[Warning] Aborted connection XXX to db: 'gitlabhq_production' user: 'gitlab' host: 'localhost' (Unknown error)I double checked the config, including password and access rights, and it's all correct.
