Authentication failure! ldap_error: ActionView::Template::Error, undefined method `is_admin?' for nil:NilClass

Some users (two so far), when trying to login for the first time via LDAP, get this error:
Authentication failure! ldap_error: ActionView::Template::Error, undefined method 'is_admin?' for nil:NilClass
I looked at LDAP records and could not find anything unusual about their users. Did not have the time to analyze source code thoroughly yet. Any ideas?
