Compare View does not display anything for two refs referring to the same commit

I spent an hour today trying to figure out why the compare view was not showing a difference between two branch on one of my repositories. So I finally tried a compare between to branches on another repo and it worked. Then I figured the out the branches were referring to the same commit. However the compare view does not indicate as such. The compare view should say something if the two refs entered are the the same thing.
