500 error on clicking "Get Patch" of Merge Request without source code

GitLab Version: 2.9.0 4afb7b7c

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Login to http://demo.gitlabhq.com
  2. Go to the page http://demo.gitlabhq.com/rails/merge_requests/87
  3. Click on "Get Patch" button

Expected output:

  1. Some meaningful information saying that "This MR does not contain the source code" or something better or
  2. Do not allow the MR to be created without source code

Actual output:

500 We're sorry, but something went wrong. We've been notified about this issue and we'll take a look at it shortly.
