Timeline for gitlab only updated on gitlab restart

The timeline for my gitlab instance is only updated when gitlab is started/restarted. This is annoying, since it makes it harder to see if my developers have pushed new commits and the time associated with an action is also wrong. I've followed the installation instructions to the letter ... Does anybody have any idea what the issue might be?
