Unable to create new repositories

I managed to have the gitlabhq up and running on centos6.3. When I try to create a new project in the web interface, it says the creation was successful, yet when I try to push/pull/w00tevah it fails.
From a brief check in the server itself, the repository was not even created - only the user name under which I tried to create it. i.e. /home/git/repositories/user/ was created, but not /home/git/repositories/user/repo.git
It might already been written here, but I couldn't find it. Thanks in advance.
