failing check for gitolite version

The check

checks for gitolite version as

def gitolite_version
  gitolite_version_file = "#{gitolite_home}/gitolite/src/VERSION"
  if File.readable?(gitolite_version_file)
    File.read(gitolite_version_file)
  end
end

In a current checkout of gitolite, the VERSION file does seem to exist.

(I'm unsure how gitolite version can be obtained except head CHANGELOG)
