how do you upgrade from 2.7 to currnet releases? what upgrade path?

previous wiki 2.7->2.9 guide says to use git pull origin stable, it failed miserably, it direct jumps to 4.1.
Q: What upgrade path should I follow? or Can I start a fresh one and copy old data over?
