Gitlab commands take a ridiculously long time to complete

I've just installed 5.0 using the guide and am really surprised at how long it takes to run seemingly simple commands. I started bundle exec rake gitlab:check RAILS_ENV=production a few minutes ago, and I still see no output whatsoever from my server. top shows the ruby command running at 95% or more CPU usage.
