Can't push to gitlab origin

Getting error:
W access for reponame DENIED to username
(Or there may be no repository at the given path. Did you spell it correctly?)
fatal: Could not read from remote repository.I found #1319 (closed) and #1786 which seem to relate to this but the fixes provided are for previous versions of Gitlab.
I have Gitlab 5.1 and I previously had 2.7 or thereabouts so I guess there's still some legacy cruft in there (which I haven't got any idea how to get rid of).
