potential LDAP username duplicate problem

We have potential problem with LDAp authentication. Username changing is turned off. We have lots users in LDAP. Some of them are with the same firstname and lastname. It seems that username is created like firstname.username from email address which is in a form of [email protected]. Is this true?
I would suggest implement a feature to choose from which LDAP attribute to form an username.
