SMTP Email issues

The installation doc never mentions setting up SMTP Email. I found this gist: https://gist.github.com/xavierjurado/3138813
..but I am still not receiving emails from gitlab.
Perhaps including this in the default configuration file or the installation doc would be helpful, if supported.
