Getting "Nothing to merge from <source branch> to <target branch>" when submitting a merge request.

I'm sure the branches differ, yet after I push submit - this is what is shown and an empty merge request is created... Another issue is that when comparing branches (Commits->Compare) no output is shown. There is nothing in any of the logs.
