mysql server installation not asking for root password.

I freshly installed ubuntu 12.04 and did the instruction for installation but when mysql-server is installed, it did not ask for its password and directly asks for mysql root password when initializing gitlab database. I dont know what to type because it I didnt set up for the root password of mysql.
