Characters bug out after running "gitlab-ctl tail"

For some reason, I get very buggy characters after I run gitlab-ctl tail. To fix it, I either reboot, or open a blank file in nano.
(I crossed out my IP in red, but in the IP it has a down arrow instead of a dot)
I am running Ubuntu 14.04 in VirtualBox with the Gitlab omnibus package installed.
I encountered this while trying to figure out why the account creation stopped working (in gitlab.rb i have signup_enabled 'true'), and I decided to see if there was any console errors. Any idea of what is causing this?
