500 error on /users/sign_in page since upgrade from 8.0.5 to 8.1

Hi, I'm running the omnibus package on Debian 7 (Debian's nginx instead of omnibus nginx), and since upgrade from 8.0.5 to 8.1 (and now also 8.1.2), I receive a '500' on the /users/sign_in page. Already logged in users are able to browse GitLab without a problem.
Neither /var/log/gitlab/gitlab-rails/production.log nor /var/log/gitlab/unicorn/unicorn_stderr.log show anything unusual. gitlab-ctl reconfigure does not help. A downgrade back to 8.0.5 is my current workaround.
Any ideas?
